Workshop Title

Integrative Neuropsychological Approach to QEEG, Neurofeedback & Biofeedback with ADHD, ASD and Concussions

Workshop Description

ADHD is the most common childhood disorder and the COVID pandemic has increased the severity of many individuals’ symptoms. The prevalence of Autism continues to increase in multiple cultures and ethnicities and is now estimated to be 1 out of 36 children. Increasing numbers of adults are being diagnosed with ADHD, Aspergers and Autism. However, there is also significant underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis, and also mismanagement in treatments in these areas. And increasing numbers of individuals are seeking non-medications treatments due to prescription shortages. This workshop will present a integrative approach to QEEG and neurofeedback and HRV biofeedback for the diagnosis and treatment of Autism, Aspergers and ADHD in children-adults. The use of QEEG brain mapping to discover which subtype of Autism, Aspergers and ADHD is present will be explained. In addition, concussions in athletes will be reviewed. The use of the combinations of HRV biofeedback, direct Neurofeedback ultra low pulse stimulation and QEEG Guided Neurofeedback for concussions in athletes will be presented. We will review the use of QEEG brain mapping and continuous performance tests to select, guide and monitor neurofeedback protocol selection. Neurofeedback candidate selection, protocol development and treatment decisions will be explained that lead to successful outcomes. This workshop will also review a multimodality treatment approach for patients with Autism, Aspergers, ADD/ADHD and concussions. Pre and post-neurofeedback QEEG and CPT case study data and research studies will be presented for ADHD and ASD, including significant research in these areas including research on the effects of Neurofeedback on MRI and DTI with Autistic students. Research using these biofeedback, direct neurofeedback and QEEG Neurofeedback approaches with individuals and retired NFL players will also be presented. This workshop will present a systematic integrative neuropsychological approach for diagnosis and individualized personalized biofeedback and QEEG Guided Neurofeedback treatment monitoring for these common issues. Plenty of time will be available for questions.

Learning Objectives

1) Discuss QEEG subtypes of Autism, Aspergers and ADHD and how they differ and overlap.

2) Understand how to use CPT, Memory tests and QEEG to monitor treatment effects of neurofeedback.

3) Apply and combine biofeedback, neurofeedback and direct neurofeedback strategies and techniques for Autism, Aspergers, Concussions and Anxiety.

4) Use QEEG and computerized testing to guide neurofeedback selection and protocol development.

About Michael Linden
Michael Linden is a licensed Psychologist and a Nationally Certified Senior Fellow in Biofeedback and Neurofeedback Therapist. Dr. Linden has been the director of Attention Learning Centers (ALC) and specialized in assessment/treatment of ADD/ADHD, Aspergers/Autism, Anxiety & Concussions since 1982.

Dr. Linden majored in Biology at the University of Michigan
(1978-1980) and Psychology at the University of Miami (1980-1982), where he received his Bachelors degree with Honors. He received his M.A. in Clinical Psychology and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from California School of Professional Psychology in 1988. Dr. Linden had a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at UC Irvine in Neuropsychology and at the UC Irvine Child Development Center.

Dr. Linden participated in the initial research studies of the EEG Theta/Beta ratio with ADHD which was published in 1999 (later FDA
approved) and published the first controlled study of Neurofeedback with ADHD more than 25 years ago.

Dr. Linden discovered 6 subtypes of Autism & 2 types of Aspergers biomarkers based on QEEG research, (Journal of AAPB, 2010; “QEEG Guided Neurofeedback for Autism” in the book Images in Autism, 2013).
He participated in a multi-site study together with UCSD of the effects of Neurofeedback on connectivity measures and DTI with ASD students. His programs of Biofeedback and QEEG Guided Neurofeedback have resulted in improvements for children, adolescents and adults in attention, hyperactivity, communication, socialization, behavior and even seizure disorders.

Dr. Linden published (Biofeedback Magazine, 2015) an article where he was able to assess two concussions in a soccer player and successfully treat the symptoms of both, allowing the student to reduce and eliminate her post-concussion symptoms. Dr. Linden has presented his research and clinical experience with QEEG and Neurofeedback with athletes with ADHD, Aspergers and concussions/TBI at: 2012 London Summer Olympics, 2013 Sport Neuropsychology Society meeting in Minnesota and 2018 Sport Concussion Summit at UCLA. He is an editor and author of the book: Applications of Biofeedback and Neurofeedback in Sport Psychology. More recently, ALC has been one of the research sites for QEEG evaluation and clinical studies of Direct Neurofeedback (Ultra Low Pulse Electric Current EEG Biofeedback) with retired NFL players with Dementia, which have had promising results in both cognitive and physical symptoms.

His studies using QEEG and Neurofeedback have been featured in the LA times, NBC Dateline, ABC News, PBS, NBC “Autism: The Hidden Epidemic”, and CBS “The Doctors”. Dr. Linden has presented about brain functioning and treatments for ADHD/ASD nationally at the National Autism Association & Autism One, CHADD, and internationally at Peking University, University of Madrid & the Australia Neuroscience Society. He volunteers his time running supports for adults and parents with ADD & Aspergers at Saddleback & Mariners Church. Dr. Linden is a frequent speaker locally & remains passionate about this field!
