Workshop Title

Overview on Biofeedback Applications and Skills

Workshop Description

This 1-day workshop is for health professionals who want to learn how to use the latest “cutting edge” biofeedback technology with a focus on muscle, temperature, skin conductance, heart rate and respiration recording and training.

Morning session: Overview of the key features of advanced biofeedback peripherals and wearable devices (e.g., Biograph Infiniti, FlowMD, Upright). Live demonstrations, assessments and hands-on training approaches makes the workshop applied and practical. The topics will vary depending upon the request by the participants and can include:

– Optimal sensor placement and equipment adjustment
– Stress profiling, Pain assessment and Protocol selection
– Data analysis and interpretation with and without clients present
– Biofeedback monitoring within a systems perspective

Afternoon session: Participants will strengthen knowledge through “hands-on” experience using Surface Electromyography (SEMG), Respiration, Temperature, Skin Conductance, Heart Rate feedback techniques.    Topics may  include strategies for reducing backaches (e.g., muscle discomfort), chest-aches (e.g., breathing issues related to asthma) headaches (e.g., migraines), stomachaches (e.g., abdominal pain), pelvic region discomfort (e.g., menstrual cramps), as well as cover addressing symptoms related to depression, anxiety and anger associated with body discomfort. Please bring your tough cases to review, sharing and learning from the others.

Learning Objectives

  1.
  2. 1) Increase exposure on the key features of the BioGraph Infiniti and selected wearable devices.
  3.
  4. 2) Demonstrate how to use different sensors including Surface Electromyography (SEMG), Respiration, Temperature, Skin Conductance, Electroencephalography (EEG), Heart Rate and Electrocardiology (EKG) with audio and visual multimedia biofeedback screens, sounds and games.
  5.

About Frank DeGregorio

Frank DeGregorio has a Diplome d’Etudes Collegiales (DEC) in Computer Science and Networking and a Certificate as a Programming Analyst. He has over 20 years of experience as technical, network, computer and high-level troubleshooting for Thought Technology. In addition, he has over 12 years of experience teaching BioGraph workshops with Lynda Thompson, Ph.D. and has had the opportunity to attend a wide variety of workshops held by clinicians such as Dr. Barry Sterman, Dr. Tanju Surmeli, Dr. Don Moss and Dr. Richard Gevirtz, Dr. Erik Peper and Dr. Vietta Sue Wilson. Frank’s extensive knowledge of all the software and hardware products offered by Thought Technology gives him the unique ability to take participants from installation of the software to using it effectively.

About Erik Peper

Erik Peper is an internationally known expert on holistic health, stress management, and biofeedback. He is a professor at San Francisco State University, where he was instrumental in establishing the Institute for Holistic Health Studies, the first holistic health program at a public university in the U.S. He is president of the Biofeedback Federation of Europe (BFE), former president of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology (AAPB), and has a biofeedback practice in Berkeley, CA at BiofeedbackHealth. He is an author of numerous scientific articles and books such as Make Health Happen, Fighting Cancer-A Nontoxic Approach to Treatment, and Biofeedback Mastery. He publishes the blog, the peper perspective-ideas on illness, health and well-being (www.peperperspective.com). His research interests focus on self-healing strategies to optimize health, illness prevention, optimizing respiration and posture, and self-mastery with biofeedback.

About Richard Harvey

Richard Harvey, PhD is a faculty member of the Department of Health Education and Holistic Health at San Francisco State University. Before joining the faculty at San Francisco State University, prior experience included working as an Epidemiologist in Orange County, California; as a University of California, Irvine Tobacco-Use Research Center Fellow; and, as a University of California, Irvine Counseling Center Biofeedback and Stress Management Program Director. Research interests currently include developing holistic stress-reduction interventions that promote personal courage using biofeedback, and have included federally funded research related to tobacco use and cessation. Professional association experience includes serving on the Board of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB) as the Treasurer and as President as well as on the Board of the Western Association of Biofeedback and Neuroscience — formerly the Biofeedback Society of California– in many roles including President. Professional association presentations, workshops and invited keynote addresses have covered themes linking biofeedback with other areas such as psychoneuroimmunology, ergonomics, resiliency and, stress profiling.
