The Importance of Neurofeedback (NF) Treatment in Depression
Workshop Description
Neurofeedback has been used successfully in numerous cases of ADHD, depression, anxiety and mTBI. Learn the fundamentals of biomarkers findings in some psychiatric illnesses (Depression, vs Bipolar Disorder, Dementia, Anxiety Disorders, and mTBI) and be able to recognize characteristic marker analysis before neurofeedback treatment and during neurofeedback treatment. Develop a rationale intervention based on this assessment data which develops baseline NF treatment protocols for personalized medicine treatment model in depression.
Learning Objectives
- 1) To be able to use one of the non-medication treatments for Depression such as neurofeedback.
2) If depression patients don’t get better with medication or other treatments, to learn more effective ways of treating depression.
3) Learn how to use neurofeedback as a therapeudic tool.
About Tanju Surmeli
Dr. Tanju Sürmeli received his Medical Doctor degree from Dokuz Eylül University in Izmir, Turkey. He completed Postgraduate training at the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program at Harvard Medical School and the Research Fellowship in EEG and Psychopharmacology at New York Medical College and the residency training in Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Connecticut/Institute of Living, Yale, and University of Texas, San Antonio. He is a board-certified psychiatrist and founder and director of the Healthy Living Center for Research and Education and the founder of the Biofeedback, Neurofeedback and QEEG/ERP use in Psychiatry Foundation in Istanbul, Turkey. As well as having numerous memberships and teaching positions in international medical societies he is also a reviewer for numerous prestigious journals. He is the previous president of the International Quantitative Board of Electrophysiology in the US and was a Board member for the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research in the US and a Board member for the Society of Applied Neuroscience in the UK. His Schizophrenia Case Study paper was awarded as a publication that, “in its consideration, has most significantly advanced the field of Neurofeedback in 2013”. Author of textbooks or chapters on Psychiatry, QEEG, and Neurofeedback, and papers published in International Journals. His Research Interests include QEEG, Neurofeedback in Depression, MCI, Alzheimer’s Disease, Vascular Dementia, Down Syndrome, Mental Disability, and Schizophrenia. He took part in the Turkey branch of the European Union’s COST B27 proposal for the Electric Neuronal Oscillations (ENOC) and Cognition action program.
About Ayben Ertem
Ayben Ertem is a family therapist and BCIA-certified neurofeedback practitioner. She has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from METU and a master’s degree in Health Psychology from Walden University. She has been working in this field for more than 20 years and has published five papers with Dr.Surmeli. She enjoys combining neurofeedback with her therapy practice. She has also been the owner of a game company that produces therapeutic card games for the last 6 years.
