Workshop Title

Treatment of Psychosomatic Disorders Using an Integrated Approach of Biofeedback and Lifestyle Interventions

Workshop Description

Factors that contribute to the development of psychosomatic disorders include an inability to down-regulate, physically and mentally, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. Combining lifestyle interventions with biofeedback to assess and restore autonomic balance is an effective approach to treat psychosomatic disorders. In this workshop you will learn specific and evidence-based biofeedback protocols for the treatment of common psychosomatic disorders: hypervigilance and hypertension (workshop day 1) and insomnia (workshop day 2). The recently developed “My Lifestyle Power” model is added to the biofeedback treatment as the framework for living a healthy lifestyle. This model covers 7 domains of living a healthy lifestyle: Restorative Sleep, Healthful Nutrition, Physical Vitality, Inner Balance, Feeling Connected, Meaningful Living and Resilient Mindset. Case example, demonstrations and hands-on practices will illustrate the application and effectiveness of this integrated approach.

Workshop day 1: Treatment of Hypervigilance and Hypertension

Specific topics covered include:

• The psychosomatic competence model as a rationale to use biofeedback in order to create body awareness and improve internal self-regulation skills

• Demonstration of the biofeedback stress profile, which provides insights in the autonomic response during stress and relaxation

• Treatment of hypervigilance with hands-on practice “skin conductance downtraining” to teach inner focus and grounding

• Treatment of hypertension with hands-on practice “heart rate variability training” and “thermal biofeedback” to restore autonomic balance and sensitivity of the baroreflex

Workshop day 2: Treatment of Insomnia

Specific topics covered include:

• The psychophysiology of sleep and how to differentiate different types of insomnia: lifestyle-related, sympathetic dominance or busy brain/ruminating

• Treatment of lifestyle-related insomnia demonstrating the efficacy of the Firstbeat Life heart rate variability monitoring system that turns stress, recovery, sleep and exercise data into actionable insights – inspiring and guiding positive lifestyle changes

• Treatment of insomnia caused by a sympathetic dominance with hands-on practice “slow breathing” and “muscle relaxation”

• Treatment of insomnia caused by a busy brain/ruminating with focus on stress reduction and calming of the brain using apps.

It is possible to attend these workshops as separate workshops.

Learning Objectives

  1. 1) Participants will be able to describe the autonomic disbalance in insomnia and hypertension.

2) Participants will understand the rationale of combining lifestyle interventions and biofeedback when treating psychosomatic disorders.

3) Participants will be able to translate biofeedback assessment data into a treatment plan.

4) Participants will be able to apply biofeedback protocols for psychosomatic disorders; effortless diaphragmatic breathing, heart rate variability training and thermal biofeedback.
