Workshop Title
Neurophenomenology of QEEG: Bridging Objective Measurements of Brain Dysfunction with Clinical Insight in Precision Psychiatry
Workshop Description
This workshop explores the Neurophenomenology of QEEG within the new RDoC framework (NIMH) to advance the role of mental health practitioners in the emerging field of Precision Psychiatry. Neurophenomenology correlates brain data with subjective human experiences and intentions. Participants will learn how to combine QEEG, an objective measure of brain dysfunction, with developmental and psycho-social data for personalised assessments and interventions. We’ll delve into specific brain areas like the cingulate cortex, crucial for emotional modulation, shaping experiences and beliefs. The workshop also covers a step-by-step process for designing neuromodulation protocols from raw EEG data, moving beyond standard Neurometrics. Real-life clinical studies will demonstrate QEEG’s application in treatment and interventions. The workshop will also demonstrate how integrating subjective experiences with neurophysiological data fosters deeper patient engagement and more effective, personalized care.
Learning Objectives
- 1) Understand the Integration of Neurophenomenology and QEEG: Participants will learn how to correlate brain data with subjective experiences and intentions, using the RDoC framework to advance personalised assessments and interventions in Precision Psychiatry.
- 2) Develop Skills in Designing Neuromodulation Protocols: Attendees will be introduced to a step-by-step process for creating neuromodulation protocols from raw EEG data, moving beyond traditional Neurometrics.
- 3) Apply QEEG in Clinical Practice: Through real-life case studies, participants will explore how integrating subjective experiences with neurophysiological data enhances patient engagement and leads to more effective, personalized care.
About Antonio Martins-Mourao
Antonio Martins-Mourao is a clinical psychologist and neuro-psycho-physiologist with a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from University College London (UCL). A certified member of the British Psychological Society’s Clinical Division, his career spans over three decades, combining research and practical application in mental health.
At the UK Open University, he lectured Psychophysiology & Mental Health and founded the QEEG & Brain Research Lab, focusing on neuromarkers for anxiety disorders, OCD, and PTSD. He also leads LondonScientific Neurotherapy, specialising in neuromodulation for trauma treatment.
His workshops, well-known in Europe and Brazil, bridge a gap between the objective measurement of brain dysfunction and understanding patient experiences. He emphasises an ecological approach to brain health, considering developmental, psychosocial, and educational contexts in treatment plans.
Dr. Martins-Mourao is recognised for translating complex neurophysiological concepts into clear, actionable insights, ensuring that participants, regardless of prior expertise, can grasp and apply the principles taught in his workshops.
He is the author of “Alpha-Theta Neurofeedback in the 21st Century: A Handbook for Clinicians and Researchers,” and collaborates with Professor Juri Kropotov of the Institute of the Human Brain. He has been invited by Jay Gunkelman to participate in the upcoming Suisun QEEG Summit 2024. He is also a regular presenter at BFE meetings, and a member of the Advisory Board at the Neurofeedback and Neuromodulation Research Foundation FNNR.
Workshop participants can expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of QEEG in clinical settings, benefiting from his extensive research and practical experience to enhance their diagnostic and treatment capabilities.
